Thanks so much for allowing me to review this book!
A novel about the end of days full of surprising beginnings
The world is living in the shadow of oncoming disaster. An asteroid is set to strike the earth in just one week’s time; catastrophe is unavoidable. The question isn’t how to save the world—the question is, what to do with the time that's left? Against this stark backdrop, three island teens wrestle with intertwining stories of love, friendship and family—all with the ultimate stakes at hand.
Alexandra Coutts's TUMBLE & FALL is a powerful story of courage, love, and hope at the end of the world.
Tumble and Fall has an amazing cover that intrigued me to no end! At first, I thought this book was a contemporary novel, however, as I read the summary I found it was a mix of sci-fi and contemporary. Which, I thought was also very intriguing and made me want to read it even more out of curiosity. However, as I read on the story just seemed to fall a little short for me.
Tumble and Fall has three different main characters and points of views – Caden, Zan and Sienna. Caden is a nerd at hard, but ever since his dad abandoned his family he has put that aside and became somewhat of a, “party animal.” Zan has lost her high school sweetheart and even though it’s almost been a year she still misses him every day and is still trying to come to terms that he is really gone. Last, but not least, Sienna’s mom died a few years ago and ever since then she has been at The House for mental reasons until the day that her father comes get her to take her home due to the recent news of the impending doom of the world – an asteroid striking earth and knocking it out of its orbit. With only a few days left of their life they all set out on their own separate adventures, some willingly and others not so much, to discover everything they want to know before they die.
I feel as if Tumble and Fall had such a great concept, but didn’t quite reach that concept. I’ve never read a book before were an author attempted to combine sci-fi with contemporary before and I applaud the author for trying. However, I faced some problems throughout reading this book.
The first real big problem I had was that I couldn’t quite connect with every single character. It felt as if I was reading a completely different book when I got to Caden and he just wasn’t as interesting as the other characters in the novel. As the novel progressed I actually skipped his chapter once or twice because the things his father did was just out right outrageous. Buying your son a prostitute is defiantly not the route to go. Okay, so I understand the world is fixing to end, but I felt as if that was kind of thrown into the book at last minute like yeah oh let’s make his dad buy him a prostitute that should make it interesting. Caden was the least relatable character in this novel.
The second problem was that while I connected with the other two characters, sometimes it felt as if there was just not enough going on. I mean let’s be realistic, if an asteroid is going to strike earth, there is going to be complete chaos not this calm community. I just felt as if there was just not enough chaos as I expected there to be.
While I did encounter some problems while reading this book, I do have to give this author some props on the other two characters – Zan and Sienna. I connected to Zan and Sienna so much! In fact, it’s the only thing that made me want to finish the book. While the beginning was quite dull, the romance just progressed throughout the book until the end and I was quite interested in how these romances where going to turn out.
Now on to the end! The ending was a bummer and totally not what I was expecting. At the beginning of this book it felt like a roaring fire because I was so excited to read this novel and as the story progressed the fire just burned out little by little. When it got to the end I was completely disappointed that the book didn’t go out with a BANG like I believe it should have.
In the end, this book will be for someone who loves sci-fi with tons of insta-love and who doesn’t mind reading about three different main characters. This book, while it had its flaws still had a story and I still couldn’t put it down. In the end, although it was a miss for me, I still liked it and you should give it a try for yourself!

Summary:
If you can grill it,
smoke it, or fry it, Nora Henderson knows all about it. She’s been
basting baby back ribs and pulling pork at her father’s barbeque joint
since she was tall enough to reach the counter. When she’s accepted to Taste Test,
a reality-television teen cooking competition, Nora can’t wait to leave
her humble hometown behind, even if it means saying good-bye to her dad
and her best friend, Billy. Once she’s on set, run-ins with her
high-society roommate and the maddeningly handsome—not to mention
talented—son of a famous chef, Christian Van Lorten, mean Nora must work
even harder to prove herself. But as mysterious accidents plague the
kitchen arena, protecting her heart from one annoyingly charming fellow
contestant in particular becomes the least of her concerns. Someone is
conducting real-life eliminations, and if Nora doesn’t figure out who,
she could be next to get chopped for good.

Guys first off look at the gorgeous cover! This cover drew me in as
soon as I saw the cover and the name. For all of you who don’t know, I am a
cooking and baking fanatic and I have no idea why, but this book was just my
cup of tea!
Norah Henderson is a girl from a small southern region who has always
had one dream – to be the best chef she can be and get into the best culinary
school in Paris. There’s only one problem, she doesn’t have the money to go to
her dream school. In order to follow her dreams she submits her application to
the Taste Test, a show in which teenagers compete for the ultimate prize – a scholarship
to the school of her dreams. Overcome with joy when she receives her acceptance
letter she packs and is off for the
journey of her life. When she first arrives at the place she will be living for
the next few months, or until she is kicked off the show, she is met with a
very un-warm welcome from Joy, a snobby, rich girl from New York, and
Christian, a too full of himself guy who just likes to test Norah’s patience.
Norah is a very nice, sweet southern girl who enters this world with no
thought of what it was going to be like and is teased by the other contestants
because of her background. However, her character is very admirable because she
is able to dish the criticism right back to the one and only Christian.
Christian is unlike any character I've encountered before. He’s so
complex it was hard to tell what he was really thinking or what he was planning
next. At first, Christian was really mean to Norah, but my first though was
that Christian was obviously a rich kid who was a jerk, but as the fighting
continued it got my head turning. I say this because always arguing tends to
lead to a crush. So, from this moment on, I was fan girling over the possibility of Norah and Christian in a relationship.
What intrigued me so much about Taste
Test was that not only was it a competition and contemporary story, it showed the
other side of the competition and the people who would do anything just to win.
The mystery aspect in this book had my mind turning in double time because all
the leads point in one direction, but actually it’s the person you would least
expect and that’s what I liked so much about this book because you just couldn't assume.
If I had to describe this book in one sentence the first thing that pops
into my head is The Selection meets
the cooking world and instead of the prince as a prize it’s a scholarship
If you are looking for a fun, light hearted book with a little competition
added to the mix, then this is the book
for you and even if you’re not you should still give this book a try because
you never know if it’s your cup of tea
till you try it.

Guest Post|Question and Answers
Q:Is Long QT a real disease?
CJ: Yes. As a
pediatrician I diagnosed my niece with Long QT Syndrome when she was born. Her
heart specialists believe she's the youngest person in the world diagnosed with
Long QT. She's had to take medicine every day of her life and can't ever skip a
day. So far that's added up to over ten thousand pills taken.
You
know that feeling you get when you've run as hard and fast as you can and you
stop but your heart keeps galloping along? And you wonder for a second if maybe
it's not going to stop, but will keep galloping out of control? But then of
course it settles back down. For people with Long QT, their heart doesn't
change gears well, going from regular to galloping and back again. So they have
to avoid anything that would make their heart race.
No
sports or aerobic exercise. No horror films. No roller coaster rides. No
jumping into cold water on a hot summer's day.
But
that doesn't have to stop someone with Long QT like my niece from having a
great life. Today she is a brilliant, active fourteen-year-old who gets
straight A's, enjoys riding horses, archery, reading, breeding Rottweilers, and
who wants to grow up to be either a fashion designer or President of the United
States. Her main fashion accessory is her portable defibrillator, Phil, who
goes with her everywhere, including camping, to the beach, and recently to her
first Broadway show.
BROKEN is dedicated to
her fearless approach to life where outwitting Death is simply part of her
daily routine.
Q: What was it like working in an ER? Is it like on TV?
CJ: Definitely nothing like Grey's Anatomy, but the first few
seasons of ER get it right. Working
in the ER is basically about learning how to control (and live with) chaos, the
art of listening, and how to quickly decide what's the most important thing you
need to tackle next.
I
worked three jobs to put myself through medical school and one of them was
waitressing at a very busy family restaurant. Honestly, that was the best
preparation I ever could have had for life in the ER.
Q: Why did you leave medicine to write books?
CJ: I've been a storyteller all my life—a
fact that used to get me placed in time-out a lot as a kid. But writing stories
has always been my way of making sense of the chaos that goes on in the world
around us. I wrote my first novel in college and wrote two more science fiction
novels in medical school.
Then,
while I was an intern at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, one of my close
friends was murdered. Dealing with that grief and trauma while still working
seventy hours a week and trying to save lives—I wasn't prepared for that. So I
turned to my writing and that's when I wrote my first thriller. I never thought
about actually making a career of it until years later when friends who were
published authors encouraged me to enter a national writing contest and I was a
finalist. This led to several publishing contracts and I realized that as much
as I loved being a doctor, here was a chance for a second dream come true:
being a full time writer.
It
was a huge leap of faith leaving my job (and my patients—I missed them, a lot!)
but I've always believed that if you're going to dream, you should dream big,
so I went for it. Since then I've published twenty books, hit #2 on the New
York Times bestseller list, won awards for my writing, and most importantly,
have had the chance to impact millions of people through my novels. Talk about
a dream come true!
Q: What's your best advice for someone who wants to be a writer?
CJ: Never surrender,
never give up. Writing is hard work, it takes years to master the craft, so you
need to stick with it. And read, read, read…pay attention to what makes the
books you like work as well as why the books you don't like fail. You never
stop learning in this job, but that's also what makes it so much fun.
