Fathomless by Jackson Pearce

Fathomless
Author: Jackson Pearce
Series: Fairytale Retellings
Pages:304
Publisher:Little Brown
Published: September 4th,2012
Source: SBB ARC tour (Thanks so much!)
Summary:

Celia Reynolds is the youngest in a set of triplets and the one with the least valuable power. Anne can see the future, and Jane can see the present, but all Celia can see is the past. And the past seems so insignificant -- until Celia meets Lo.

Lo doesn't know who she is. Or who she was. Once a human, she is now almost entirely a creature of the sea -- a nymph, an ocean girl, a mermaid -- all terms too pretty for the soulless monster she knows she's becoming. Lo clings to shreds of her former self, fighting to remember her past, even as she's tempted to embrace her dark immortality.

When a handsome boy named Jude falls off a pier and into the ocean, Celia and Lo work together to rescue him from the waves. The two form a friendship, but soon they find themselves competing for Jude's affection. Lo wants more than that, though. According to the ocean girls, there's only one way for Lo to earn back her humanity. She must persuade a mortal to love her . . . and steal his soul

 Review:

How do I begin to describe this book? My thoughts are honestly all over when it comes to this book. This is actually my first Jackson Pearce book and I know I read them out of order from when they were published. However, I know they are all based on different fairytales. With that being said this one is a dark, twisted version of the Little Mermaid.
This book was ….ehh definitely dark and quite frankly a little too weird for me. I begin this book with a very open mind. I thought it was going to be a great read and maybe the first mermaid novel I have had great expectations for. Those expectations slowly faded for me, but I have to say there were a few things I did like.
Lo is very confused with who she is? who she was? ahh yeah, you get my drift haha She has no memory of anything that happened before she became a mermaid. She is trying to find her way and the truth behind why she is the way she is now. There is a little bit of mystery in it, but honestly, I really didn’t like Lo. I really wanted to skip all of the chapters and go to Celia.
Celia was amazing. I loved her place in the story and how she comes to find herself along the way. Celia and Jude were just J perfect together. I loved them they made me smile and have hope in this book. Celia also learns to get along with her sister and realizes she needs them and does what all sisters do in the end – forgive and make up.
Celia’s part of the story was awesome. Whereas on the other hand, Lo  was just not that interesting to me. I know I am probably supposed to love her more than Celia, but I just couldn’t see it. I tried to see her point of view and get her, but there was something there that enabled me from doing that.
If you like mermaids maybe this book is a little more suited for you than me. I am really hoping that all mermaid books are not like this because I would really like to try more. This book I have to admit was a very dark, weird mermaid story. So if you like that sort of thing check it out.

Blog Tour\ Review- A Bad Day for Voodoo

A Bad Day for Voodoo by Jeff Strand
Series: Standalone
Pages:272
Publisher:Source Books
Release Date: June 5th,2012
Source: Sourcebooks
Thanks source for providing me with a copy for the tour.

Summary:
When your best friend is just a tiny bit psychotic, you should never actually believe him when he says, "Trust me. This is gonna be awesome."

Of course, you probably wouldn't believe a voodoo doll could work either. Or that it could cause someone's leg to blow clean off with one quick prick. But I've seen it. It can happen.

And when there's suddenly a doll of YOU floating around out there—a doll that could be snatched by a Rottweiler and torn to shreds, or a gang of thugs ready to torch it, or any random family of cannibals (really, do you need the danger here spelled out for you?)—well, you know that's just gonna be a really bad day

Review:

This is one of those Laugh out Loud stories you need every once in a while. I can’t tell you how much this was fun to read. I have to admit it got a little boring at times, but there is really always something going on.
Adam, poor Adam. I feel bad for Adam because it doesn’t seem like he’s too bright if you know what I mean. Tyler has the worst experience with voodoo dolls I have to tell you. Poor thing freaks out when his teacher is hurt from a voodoo doll and then he gets one of him. Tyler never gets a break I swear. He chases this doll around the city freaking out because well he doesn’t want to get hurt.
Expected the unexpected in this book. Seriously… Tyler does some really crazy things that is like oh my gosh Tyler why would you do that? Oh and then there’s Kelly; Kelly really reminds me of me. Especially at the beginning she is the teacher’s pet, always asking questions and her reactions are probably dead on what I would have done in the situation, but not so sure I would have tagged along for the ride.(Haha)

To me it was a really light, funny read and really different from anything I’ve read. I’ve heard of voodoo dolls before and what they do, but Strand puts a funny, intense twist on this story and just a good read to get my mind off of all the other genres in YA because you know every once in a while you need to read something different. If you are looking for a fun, light read be sure to check it out :)
